Alfred Stieglitz

Alfred Stieglitz was born on January 1st, 1864 in New Jersey. He was an American Photographer and a promoter of art. He promoted that photography was art. He was know for running many popular art and photography galleries where he promoted photographers and artists' work. He was born to
German-Jewish parents. He had 5 other siblings, including twins who he was jealous of because of their closeness. He was a very educated person because his parents made sure he had a great education before college. He grew up in a pretty wealthy family. They moved back to Germany where Alfred stayed for 10 years and became interested in photography. He was the creator or thought of the idea of the magazine Camera Work when he returned to the US. His friend Edward Steichen let him use a space which he turned into the gallery "291". In this gallery he helped other photographers and artist show off their work. He was married to Georgia O'Keeffe who was one of the painters he promoted in his gallery. He died on July 14, 1936 in New York City at the age of 82.
